Lahammer nominated for top teacher

A teacher at Burnside Elementary School has been nominated for Fox 9's Top Teacher Award.

Neil Lahammer has been teaching in Red Wing for six years and taught elsewhere five years before that. He is currently a third-grade teacher.

"I was speechless. Anyone who knows me can tell you that doesn't happen very often," he said with a laugh.

"Just to be nominated is a thrill in itself and anything beyond that is beyond my wild imagination now," Lahammer said.

The award is "Fox 9's way of recognizing our local teachers," said Scott Brady, Fox 9's vice president for creative services and marketing.

If Lahammer were to win the award, $900 dollars would be given to Burnsville Elementary School; an amount the school could do "wonderful things" with, he said.

To vote for Lahammer or one of the four other nominees, visit Fox 9's website at and click the Top Teacher Award link.

"We hope they can know the stories and they know the teacher that we have listed," Brady said. "Their story is what this is about."

The support Lahammer said he has received has been great. It started with his wife spreading the word through Facebook.

Then it "branched off to the school and now it's kind of gone beyond that," he said describing all the different ways the school, parents and community members "drum up support" for him.

Although he does not know who nominated him, he said he has been very humbled.

"I look at it as I'm a representative for the Red Wing School District," he said connecting himself to his colleges and school staff.

"I may be speechless for a long time," Lahammer said.

The online voting for Fox 9's Top Teacher Award will close April 27. Brady said the teacher who has the most votes Sunday will win the award.
