Hager City man sentenced to 50 months on meth charge

Taner John Sward was convicted of felony second-degree possession of methamphetamine in Goodhue County District Court Friday and sentenced to four years and two months at Minnesota Correctional Facility–St. Cloud.

Sward, 22, Hager City, was found at the West Seventh Street Kwik Trip with nearly 20 grams of alleged methamphetamine in May 2013.

An officer saw Sward standing next to a black Lincoln Continental with temporary Wisconsin license plates that was parked at Kwik Trip, 309 W. Seventh St., and, after noticing the vehicle had no front plate, went to investigate.

Sward tried to get in the vehicle after the officer told him not to and the officer told him several times to stay back, but Sward continued to try to get into the vehicle.

Following a scuffle, Sward was handcuffed and told he was under arrest. After noticing an open bottle of alcohol in the car, officers searched the vehicle and found a black case in the center console that contained 19.9 grams of a substance which tested positive for methamphetamine.

Sward later told officers he recently purchased $800 of methamphetamine.

Sward was also convicted on two counts of fifth-degree drug possession and will serve concurrent sentences of 15 months and 13 months.

The maximum sentence for felony second-degree drug possession of six grams or more is 25 years in prison and a $500,000 fine.

Sward was also charged with two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, seat belt violation, two counts of obstructing the legal process, giving a peace officer a false name, introducing contraband into prison, two counts of fleeing a peace officer, disorderly conduct, first-degree drug sale, three counts of driving after revocation and driver who is not owner must later provide proof of insurance, which were all dismissed.
