Welch Village Ski Area broke ground June 12 on a new maintenance facility for the resort that will include two buildings.

The plans include a building to house portable equipment for snow making and grooming and another for routine maintenance and for major repair of machinery and vehicles.

The new facility “confirms the commitment the resort has made to continually upgrade equipment, slopes and infrastructure to enhance the ski experience for its guests,” the company said. Welch Village will celebrate its 50th year of operation through the 2014-2015 season.

The original shop facility will be dismantled and moved to the Cannon Valley Trail.

Goodhue County granted the building permit June 5.

•The Red Wing Manufacturers Association held elections this month. Joel Sorenson of Xcel Energy was elected president and Dave Muelken of Automated Equipment vice president. Sharon McCord will remain secretary/treasurer.

Membership for Hancock Concrete of Cannon Falls also was approved.

The association now has an official logo as well.

•Mayo Clinic Children’s Center was ranked as the top-performing children’s hospital in Minnesota, Iowa and the Dakotas on U.S. News & World Report’s 2014-2015 Best Children’s Hospital Rankings, according to the company.

Overall rankings improved in nearly all of the pediatric specialties, Mayo said.

“The Mayo Clinic Children’s Center brings Mayo Clinic quality to children and families not only through cutting-edge interventions such as the launch of the proton beam therapy for childhood cancer in 2015 and stem cell treatment for children with heart disease, but also through the integrated, multispecialty team approach that has served as the cornerstone of the Mayo Clinic approach to patients of all ages for more than 150 years,” hospital director Dr. Randall Flick said.
