2/26/2010: BIC to break ground on Norwood expansion in days
BIC Graphic USA will break ground next week on a 45,000-square-foot expansion of its Red Wing facility.
Officials from BIC, which bought Norwood Promotional Products last year, were in Red Wing Wednesday. They presented some details on the planned expansion at the company's Norwood plant, 5151 Moundview Drive, after City Council approved a storm water management plan related to the addition.
City officials were excited about the expansion of the imprinting plant and likelihood that it will bring new jobs to Red Wing.
"This is like a homerun for Red Wing," City Council Administrator Kay Kuhlmann said.
Council members agreed.
The expansion will increase production at the Red Wing facility, but to what extent isn't known, company officials said.
Officials said the expansion is part of a major reorganization of BIC's imprinting operations, which included shutting down of its San Antonio, Texas, plant Tuesday.
BIC officials said first dibs on any new jobs will go to workers wanting to relocate from San Antonio.
The San Antonio plant employed 345 workers.
That plant's production will be consolidated into the company's other U.S. facilities in Red Wing, Sleepy Eye, Minn., and Tampa Bay, Fla.
After the expansion the facility will bear BIC's yellow logo.
