Maiden Rock house damaged in Christmas fire

MAIDEN ROCK--A Christmas evening fire heavily damaged a house several miles from Maiden Rock.

Pierce County's dispatch center received a call from the homeowner at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday he'd returned home to find the house filled with smoke, but only the family dog was inside.

Firefighters from Maiden Rock, Lund and Ellsworth stations responded, along with a paramedic from the Ellsworth Area Ambulance Service. A second call from the homeowner reported flames had broken out while fire crews were en route.

There were no injuries and the cause was unknown last week, according to information from the Ellsworth Fire Department. The house had major interior damage and wasn’t livable.

Roads leading to the W3593 110th Ave. home were described as extremely slippery by the first arriving fire unit. The scene is about a mile straight north from the village.

A crew from Pierce-Pepin Cooperative Services was also requested to assist in shutting off power.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze and reported they were mopping up just before 9 p.m.

Pierce County land records indicate the house is owned by Nicholas K. Johnson.
