Highway 61 will be single lane Wednesday for bridge work

Motorists on Highway 61 near the Red Wing Bridge will encounter flaggers after 6 p.m. Aug. 30 as crews replace a culvert under the road overnight, according to the Minnesota and Wisconsin departments of transportation.

The lane closure will take place overnight while the culvert is replaced and the road is repaved. The flaggers will be posted with temporary lighting for visibility to motorists. Work is expected to be completed by 6 a.m. Aug. 31. If weather is not conducive to work on Aug. 30, crews will return on Aug. 31 to do the work.

The Highway 63/Eisenhower Bridge will remain open, barring any emergency closures.

This project includes building a new bridge to replace the Highway 63/Eisenhower Bridge, replacing the historic Highway 63 Bridge over Highway 61, reconstructing approach roadways in Minnesota and Wisconsin, improving access to Red Wing and upgrading pedestrian and bicyclist crossings.

The prime contractor on the $63.4 million construction project is Zenith Tech. The new bridge is expected to open to traffic by fall of 2019.
