Community invited to Thanksgiving meal
Holidays such as Thanksgiving can be a lonely time for people without friends or family to share the meal and day. First United Methodist Church in Red Wing has hosted a community meal each Thanksgiving for more than 20 years.
"The idea here is to offer to those who don't have family or people in our community, who maybe don't have a spot to go to for Thanksgiving," said Don Featherstone, an organizer with the event. "This effort is a community-wide opportunity."
The meal, which will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 24 is free and open to all, but donations will be accepted. Reservations are encouraged for seating and can be made by calling the church office at 651-388-3262.
Although meals were available for delivery and carry-out in previous years, new regulations require the meal to be eaten inside the church.
Volunteers are welcome to help with preparation starting 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 23, through the early afternoon and again Thanksgiving Day 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 12:30-2:30 p.m. Volunteers are also needed to assist with cleanup after the meal.
"We're always looking for volunteers," Featherstone said. "We've had a number of people who aren't members of our church who volunteer, and we're looking for those kind of people."
Food for the meal, including turkey, potatoes, gravy, squash and a variety of pies, was donated by the First United Methodist congregation and members of the community. In previous years, the church has served Thanksgiving meals to more than 300 people.
"We encourage people who may not have a home to gather and join us for fellowship and a good meal," Featherstone said.
