A lone butterfly perches on a backyard zinnia in Red Wing. Sightings of Monarch butterflies have been almost uncommon this summer. That’s because an accumulation of weather events — early spring and dry hot summer in 2012 followed by a late spring in 2013 — helped lead to a crash in the North American population, according to Monarch Watch. Habitat loss here and in Mexico, where the butterflies spend the winter, also is a factor. (Republican Eagle photo by Anne Jacobson) 2 / 5
