County makes email changes

Commissioners voted to approve a motion that would require the county to increase retention of emails from one year to three years. IT Director Randy Johnson told the board the increase could become necessary in the discovery process of any potential litigation.

The county will retain all email and attachments sent or received by the county's email system for three years, at which point they will be automatically deleted, Johnson said.

County Attorney Stephen Betcher added that the retained emails could easily be searched to find relevant correspondences.

A second motion approved by County Board would require commissioners to use a county-provided email address in place of personal email.

That system would be implemented only after commissioners could receive training, Johnson said.
