The Cannon Valley Regional Orchestra will complete its 34th season playing music to celebrate the coming of spring.

Under the theme "Voices of Spring," mezzo soprano soloist Deesa Staats will join the orchestra 7 p.m. Friday May 17 at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls.

Staats has become a well-known singer in the region from her many musical theater appearances. She also has been featured with the CVRO several times singing opera and other classical music.

Singing Italian composer Ottorino Respighi's work for mezzo soprano and orchestra "Aretusa," Staats performs a piece based on poem by Englishman Percy Shelley. The poem's theme, in part, is about a Greek goddess who comes down from the snowy mountains to greet spring.

Staats also will sing a short selection by British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams.

The program will feature Leonard Bernstein's "Overture to Candide," a Viennese waltz, a suite of English pieces about springtime and Felix Mendelssohn's atmospheric overture about the Scottish Hebrides.

Tickets are $10 adults, $5 students and can be purchased from the Northfield Arts Guild by calling 507-645-8877, online at or at the door.
