Carly Smith was named the Minneapolis Aquatennial Queen of the Lakes on Friday evening.

Smith, a 2011 Red Wing Ambassador, will represent Minneapolis and the festival throughout the state, country and world for a year. She and the Aquatennial princesses will participate in community service projects, festival events and other programs.

Smith attends the University of Minnesota and is studying elementary education and dance. In a news release, Smith said she is passionate about serving as an ambassador for the Aquatennial and hopes to become a role model for young women in the future.

Aquatennial princesses also crowned at Friday's coronation on the University of Minnesota campus were Anna Surprenant of Sleepy Eye, Minn., and Leah Kruc of Fridley, Minn. The Dove True Beauty award (formerly Miss Congeniality) went to Stephanie Aho of Princeton, Minn.
