Red Wing's Boxrud receives leadership award

Lucy Boxrud has been working with Deer Crest Assisted Living Facility since before the building was constructed in 2006. This month, the housing director was recognized by Aging Services of Minnesota with the Ray Johnson Senior Housing Leadership Award.

"I'm very honored to be nominated by my peers and co-workers," Boxrud said of the award

One of the main reasons Boxrud won the award was her development of a program called Sky View that provides services to patients with the beginning stages of dementia, said Barbara Landeen of Aging Services of Minnesota.

"A specific care program for that niche group was something that she identified," Landeen said. "This is unique because there didn't exist a place for the early onset (dementia patients)."

People with the earlier stages of dementia need specific care, Lundeen said. "People with more advanced dementia need more one-on-one personal care," she said. "With early onset, people are less dependent on care. It's more independent living."

Under Boxrud's direction, 13 standard assisted-living apartments at Deer Crest were converted to be able to house these patients.

The addition was done with minimal construction and cost; because the space already existed, only minor adjustments - security doors and other smaller amenities - were needed.

But it's not just the addition of Sky View that Boxrud is being recognized for. Jeanna Sands, director of health services for Deer Crest, said Boxrud deserves the award because of her relationships with the residents and their families.

"She's always there for the residents. She has a calm manner about taking care of the residents and working with the staff," she said.

The Ray Johnson Senior Housing Leadership Award is given to a senior housing leader in Minnesota once a year.
