High school


Grade 7 and 8 students will receive their high school registration materials Feb. 22-23.


On Feb. 24, the eighth-grade band students will go to Lake City for a band festival.


Early release at 12:25 p.m. Feb. 25. Parent/teacher conferences will follow from 1:15 to 7:15 p.m.

St. Joseph


Students will be sharpening their math skills with graphing as we watch the different nations' winners, as well as working our large muscles.

Grade 1

First-graders will be celebrated the 100th day of school on Friday.

Grade 2

Students began a unit on government in social studies. They will learn the relationship between rights and responsibilities.

Grade 3

The third-graders will study Washington, D.C. They will look at the important buildings and monuments. They will look at founding fathers George Washington, Benjamin Banneker and Ben Franklin.

Grade 4

The fourth-grade students continued reading "Sadako" and the "Thousand Paper Cranes" by Eleanor Coerring. They began a daily journal to express their emotions to what was being read.

Grade 5

Fifth-graders focused on life in the 13 English colonies in social studies. They will learn about the economy of each of the colonies. They will learn about the slave trade and life on a plantation.





Registration for parents of children entering kindergarten this fall in Red Wing public schools will take place at the Colvill Family Center located at 269 E. Fifth St. Parents are asked to stop in anytime on March 4 from noon to 6 p.m. or March 5 from 8 a.m. to noon. The entering kindergartners must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2010.

I Love to Read Month

Illustrator/author Lauren Stringer will visit Sunnyside School on Feb. 22. Students have been studying her books and exploring her Web site in library classes.


Two hour early release at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 25 for parent-teacher conferences.


Lunch with Principal Roberts will be Feb. 26 in the art room.

Jump Rope for Heart

The event will be held during phy ed classes Feb. 26 and March 1.

Concordia Immanuel school


Fifth- through seventh-graders spent a day skiing at Welch.


Students sing at Concordia Sunday at 9:15 a.m. Wear your "Lights of the World" T-shirts.

Sunday is the first day of our Scholastic Book Fair. Books can be purchased before and after services. The book fair will also be open to purchase books on Feb. 24 and 25.

Open house

On Feb. 25 there will be an open house and pre-registration for the 2010-11 school year.

Colvill Family Center

Read-in Night

Colvill Family Center is having a Read In Night on Feb. 25 from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. This is a free event with a professional storyteller, a snack and free books.

Colvill Kids 3s

Students are reading "Goodnight Moon" by Margaret Wise Brown, cutting out circle moons and talking about "day" and "night."

Colvill Kids 4s

Students are going to the Children's Museum on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Your child needs to be at school by 8:30 a.m. and picked up by 3 p.m. They also are reading the book "The Hungry Thing" by Jan Slepian and Ann Seidler.



Grade 2

Carol Schwartau's class has been talking about Lincoln and Washington. They made a Lincoln timeline and then made their own individual timelines.

Grade 3

Julie Gore's third-graders celebrated Chinese New Year by enjoying a Chinese lunch with chopsticks and delivering gift bags to teachers and support staff at Burnside.

Grade 4

All fourth-graders completed a grade level timeline project. Students worked with their families to create timelines of significant events from their lives.

On Wednesday afternoon, Michael Pagel's students had a brain delivered to their classroom. A medical student brought in a real brain for students to examine and study.

Grade 5

Hannah Flemke and Molly Cyr will co-anchor the morning announcements on Burnside Today for the week of Feb. 22-26.

Early release

There will be early release Feb. 25 due to conferences.


Conferences will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Feb. 25 and from 2 to 8 p.m. March 2.

Parents should let school staff know as soon as possible if there is a conflict with the time that was assigned for a conference.

I Love to Read

I Love to Read trivia winners are (Feb. 1-5): Dawson Anderson, Conor Salmonson, Sally Stenrson, Allie Verret, Bruce Campbell, Hunter Steffens, Noah Salmonson, Maeve Polkinghorne, Georgie Ziemer, Jack Horsley and (Feb. 8-12) Micah Ziemer, Conor Salmonson, Bianca St Dennis, Brianna Bloomdahl, Jesse Swagger, Avy Benson, Michael Swagger, Sarah Varnado, Dawson Anderson.


Students are learning their addresses and phone numbers. Guest readers have been coming in all month for Feb. I Love To Read Month.

Grade 1

Students are studying poetry learning about words that describe.

Grades 2, 3

Students are learning about local news and studying Minnesota.

Grades 4, 5

Students are reading "The Fourth Grade Nothing" and will attend the play at the Sheldon Theatre next week.


Parent-teacher conferences are Feb. 25 and March 2.
