Shoe eliminates second shift
Red Wing Shoe Co. announced Thursday it is eliminating the second shift at the company's Plant Two facility in Red Wing's Industrial Park in February.
The company is also closing its manufacturing plant in Danville, Ky. In total, approximately 200 workers will be laid off, according to a company press release.
Local Shoe workers were told of the development Wednesday and today.
Shoe spokesperson Peter Engel said the company will offer early retirement packages to older workers in the hope of avoiding layoffs. Depending on how many workers accept early retirement there could be up to 60 local layoffs, Engel said.
