Steven Glaus, 47, of Pepin, died at the scene of an accident Wednesday afternoon in which his vehicle went off the road and ended up on railroad tracks at East River Road in Maiden Rock. Pierce County Sheriff's Department released details of the incident Thursday morning.

Glaus was northbound on Highway 35 at 1:18 p.m. when his vehicle veered off the left side of the roadway, went down and embankment and through a ditch, and came to rest between two sets of BNSF Railway Co. tracks.Rail traffic was at a standstill until the tracks were cleared.

Attempts by emergency medical service personnel to revive Glaus were unsuccessful. The Pierce County medical examiner pronounced him dead at the scene. People at the scene said it appeared Glaus became ill while driving.

Several area ambulance and rescue crews responded to the 911 call. Although there was a train on the scene shortly after the accident, there was no collision involving the train or any other vehicle. Pierce County is investigating.
