Wrestling: Panthers split

ELLSWORTH -- Second-ranked Ellsworth was able to come away with a split decision at Saturday's triangular.

The Panthers beat Tomah 56-12 but lost to No. 1 Apple Valley 59-10 Saturday afternoon.

Ellsworth had three winners against Apple Valley. Shawn Helmueller defeated Matt Hechsel by a 15-2 major decision at 160.

Nick Oeltjen won at heavyweight 4-0 over Joe Sullivan and Sam Huppert beat Steven Mincey 7-1 at 112 pounds.

All but Oeltjen were winners against Tomah. Others to claim victories include Spencer Beard at 135, Joe Kornmann at 140, Noah McLay at 152, Jordan Borst at 171, Corey Deiss at 189, Alex Hoyer at 215, Roarke Langer at 125 and Taylor Boettcher at 130.

Winning by pinfall against the Timberwolves were Beard, Kornmann, Helmueller, Borst, Deiss and Hoyer.

The Panthers now sit at 11-7 on the year. They return to Middle Border Conference action Thursday when they travel to Osceola.
