Wrestling: Panthers win big

ELLSWORTH - The Panthers used five pins in the middleweights to push themselves past Prescott 55-16 Thursday in the Panthers' season opening dual meet.

Ellsworth, ranked No. 2 in the state, won despite not having the services of team captain and defending state champion Hayden Hauschildt, who was out with an injury. They were delt a second blow when heavyweight Charlie Hinck went down with an injury in his match, causing the Panthers to lose six points by default.

Trailing Prescott 9-6, the Panthers made their run. Among those scoring pins were D.J. Yarwood at 119 pounds in 3:25; Freshman Rourke Langer in 3:40 at 125; Spencer Beard in 1:18 at 135; Noah McLay at 152 in 3:49 and Shawn Helmueller in 1:51 at 160.

Meanwhile, Sam Huppert won at 112 by a 13-2 major decision over the Cardinals' Steve Urman, Spencer Kuesel won by injury default at 145 and Jordan Borst beat Prescott's Aaron Gilles by a 5-0 decision at 171.

"It was a typical first match," Ellsworth coach Jack Radabaugh said. "Everyone was a little rusty and not quite crisp because it was their first time out again in front of the crowd and wrestling someone different than who they square off in practice."

Also winning for Ellsworth were Alex Hoyer by fall in 2:16 in his first match of the season at 215 and Taylor Boettcher by forfeit at 130.

Ellsworth hosts its invitational on Saturday.
