Priggen wins to finish in fifth place

ST. PAUL -- Lake City senior Pat Priggen won the final match of his career on Saturday in the Class AA individual state tournament at the Xcel Energy Center.

Priggen, wrestling at 160 pounds, defeated Mac Stoll of Perham 5-4 to capture fifth place.

Tied at 4 with 20 seconds left in the final period, Stoll -- coming off his second bloody nose of the match -- let Priggen get a free escape point by choosing an optional start. Priggen avoided a takedown the final 20 seconds to win fifth.

"Why he let him go, I'm not sure," West said. "I'm not sure what their game plan was."

Priggen also defeated Stoll in the first round 8-7 to start his run through state.

"He had a great tournament," Tigers coach Lonnie West said. "He was definitely a dark horse when he came into the tournament."

Priggen finished 30-11 in his final season.

For Tigers junior heavyweight Zach Loppnow, his second trip to state ends with a sixth-place finish.

Loppnow lost to Delano's Cody Socher by pin fall at 4:44, but was fighting a sprained ankle for two days, West said.

Loppnow hurt his ankle Thursday in the waning seconds of his quarterfinal victory over Blake Nath of Marshall/Lakeview. By the time he wrestled for fifth place on Saturday, he wasn't close to 100 percent.

"He was pretty much wrestling on one leg," West said.

"He had a great season and has one more year to come back and reach his goal of state champ."

Socher finishes the season 39-5, while Loppnow finishes 35-5.
