Productive day for Ellsworth at sectional meet

SPOONER, Wis. -- They don't keep official score at the WIAA Individual Sectionals anymore, but the unofficial count tallied by had No. 3 ranked Ellsworth dominating Saturday's Division 2 Spooner Sectional meet.

Those points were the result of four sectional champions and three other state qualifiers who will compete at next weekend's state meet in Madison. Ellsworth's winners include Chace Kinneman, Jordan Foy, Hayden Hauschildt and Derek Foley.

Kinneman won his 103-pound title by injury default over Jordan Schraufnagel of Mosinee. Foy downed Bloomer's Jordan Eder 8-5 at 125. Hauschildt defeated Baldwin-Woodville's Nate Stone 6-3 at 130, avenging a loss to Stone from the finals of the Middle Border Conference meet. Foley edged Medford's Donny Storck 5-3 at 160.

Three other Ellsworth wrestlers also qualified for state. Mike Brunner finished second at 119. Shawn Helmueller won his second-place wrestleback 12-10 in overtime over Tommy Dobbs of Melrose-Mindoro/Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau at 145. Jeremy Nelson rounded out the Panther contingent at 171 when he won his second-place wrestleback 6-4 over Stanley-Boyd/Thorp's Kyle Thorpe.

The seven-person group will be the largest Ellsworth contingent at state in several years.

Also participating for Ellsworth in the sectional meet were Dane Solyntjes at 112 pounds and Ryan Foley at 152, though both fell in the quarterfinal round. Jordan Zimmer (135) and Reuben Huppert (140) both lost in the third-place matches.The state meet is at the Kohl Center on the campus of the University of Wisconsin. The preliminary matches begin 5:45 p.m. Thursday.
