Red Wing High School

Registration for 2014-15

Students should have submitted their registration forms for courses for the 2014-15 school year. If they have not done so yet, they need to get them turned in their adviser ASAP.

Raised GPA

Students were challenged this year to increase their GPA and be eligible to graduate with honors: 72 students are to be congratulated for raising their GPA by .5 from the end of last school year to the end of the first semester.

Sports registration

Spring sports will be starting this month. Students who missed the sports registration meeting should stop by the Activities Office in G100 to get registered. Practices for the various sports start March 10, 17 and 24.

Quarter ends

The third quarter ends on Tuesday March 25. Students should plan accordingly.

Twin Bluff Middle School

Concert Band

On March 10 the RWHS Concert Band is performing for the fifth-graders from 9:25 to 10:00 a.m.

PAC meets

Parent Advisory Council meeting is 6:30 p.m. March 10. All parents are welcome.

Student of the Month

The Student of the Month gathering is 7:15 a.m. March 13 in the IMC.

St. John's School

Little Blessings

"Jesus Blesses the Little Children" is the Bible focus this week. Preschoolers are finding words that rhyme together.

Grades 1 and 2

First-graders had a math test this week. Second-graders are learning about measurement.

Grade 3, 4 and 5

Math 3 worked on ratios, while Math 4 used fraction cards to compare fractions. Grade 5 math took a test.

Grades 6, 7 and 8

Students in Principal Benjamin Bain's classes reviewed perfect tenses and leaned about progressive verb forms. They also learned about seismic waves and earthquakes.

Walking Wednesday

Author visit

Sunnyside students were excited to receive books written and autographed by visiting author Debra Frasier on the day of her visit. This Book for Every Child project was funded by the Red Wing Public School Foundation and the Parent Advisory Council.

Parent Advisory Council

Elementary Parent Advisory Council plans to meet at 11:30 a.m. Friday March 14 in the Sunnyside IMC.

Kindergarten 2014-15

Kindergarten registration continues at Sunnyside Elementary. The office is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bring a photo copy of your child's government-sponsored official birth certificate, your child's preschool screening date and an up-to-date copy of immunizations. For your convenience, you may log on to to print enrollment forms. We ask that you fill it out, return it to Sunnyside School.

Colvill Family Center

Colvill Kids 3's

Ms. Tiffanie's classes will be reading "Down By The Station." They will be learning all about trains and other types of transportation. The children will be introduced to a new measuring tool. The students will make a train picture and play in their new train station during our center time.

Colvill Kids Mixed Ages

Ms. Debbie's class will be reading the book "Mouse Shapes" by Ellen Stoll Walsh and thinking about how shapes are all around us. The students will create art using shapes and sing some songs about shapes.

Colvill Kids 4's

Ms. Lila's classes will be learning about frogs. Children will read "A Lost Button" from the book "Frog and Toad Are Friends" by Arnold Lobel. During the week, the students will sort buttons, put together the frog's life cycle and create a paper frog. The letter of the week is Ss (Sammy Seal).

Spanish enrichment

Miss Debbie's class will explore with shapes and learn the names for various basic shapes in Spanish. They will also create art with shapes and learn the Spanish names for the objects that they create with shapes.

Burnside Today

Announcers for the week of March 10 will be Dylan Taube and Cooper Chandler from Mr. Pagel’s classroom. The camera will be operated by Ryslan Shved from Mr. Thorson’s classroom.

Maud Hart Lovelace books

Jackie Hanson, Giselle Zacarias Siquerios, Dixon Ehlers, Sadie Bloom and Preston Carlisle have read three books. Ellie Clements, Evelyn Nelson, Madison Castner and Nadia Poole have read six books. Mallary Bade, Sydnee Nelson, Lillie Sonju, Abigail Buckley, Hallie Roschen, and Sarah Hennen have read nine books on the list.

Congratulations to Audrey Lahammer who has read all 12 books on the reading list.

Media center

The second grade at Burnside is participating in the Minnesota book award program the Star of the North. The classes have listened to the 10 book nominees and are voting for their favorite one. The award was established in 2013 to promote quality, engaging picture books and reading for pleasure among school-aged children.

Grade 4

Mr. Thorson’s students continue to write their favorite book excerpts on the wall at the back of their classroom on black paper with a silver marker. The students are finding it interesting to read what other classmates have written.


In conjunction with the Winter Olympics, students in Mrs. Zervas’ classroom worked in teams to design and build a chair lift. The goal was to carry a ping pong ball across the room utilizing a pulley system. The students read about and discussed aerial lifts and ropeway systems. The students reflected on the challenges and shared their experiences with the class.

Dr. Seuss’ birthday

Burnside Elementary celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 3. Many staff dressed in costumes and had special activities in classrooms.

Spring picture day

Spring picture day will be March 12.

Grade 2 trip

The Environmental Learning Center will be working with Burnside second-grade classes to tap and boil sap from maple trees. The classes will be tapping the trees March 13 and boiling the sap March 20. This activity compliments the second-grade science standards.

Concert dates

Please keep your calendars open for the upcoming concerts. Second grade will perform on Tuesday March 18 and fourth grade will be perform on Thursday March 20.
