Zumbrota gets Covered

Fireworks will fill the sky again at this year's Covered Bridge Music and Arts Festival in Zumbrota, Saturday June 15.

A juried artisan show, top-notch bike race and community dance are a few of opportunities at the Zumbrota Covered Bridge Music and Arts Festival.

The annual jubilation happens Thursday June 13 to Sunday June 16 throughout Zumbrota.

Gather with neighbors, family and friends to experience the festival's features including children's activities, live music, food vendors, sports tournaments, a grand parade, fireworks and street dance.

"The festival has been going on for several decades," said Dan King, Zumbrota Community Development director, "but has been in its current form for 25 years."

This year the event falls on Father's Day weekend.

Start off the weekend early with "Zumbrota Rocks The Block" Thursday night - a new extension of the festival.

Downtown will be filled with sidewalk sales, customer-appreciation promotions, food and entertainment.

Also new this year is the addition of the Nature Valley Grand Prix bicycle race course zooming through the heart of city. Cyclists leave Cannon Falls on a 93-mile course - scheduled to pass through Zumbrota at 5:30 p.m.

In the past, cyclists were routed on a shorter circuit, but significant distance has been added this year.

"We are real excited to have them come through," King said.

On Friday, try an old-fashioned "Car-Hop" at the United Redeemer Church parking lot, 560 Third St. W.

The Zumbrota Area Arts Council is again hosting "Family Movie Night" at the historic State Theater, 96 Fourth St. E. "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" plays at 7 p.m. The free screening is sponsored by Ameriprise Financial Lex & Associates and ZM Partners in Education.

Those old enough can check out the VFW, 25 First St. E., for the Friday night free street dance featuring music from the Trees.

Saturday is jammed pack with activities starting with the annual Covered Bridge 5K Fun-Run Race, a fundraiser for the Goodhue Pioneer Trail.

At City Hall find Red Wing Stoneware Pottery Sales. This year's limited edition pieces are column vases and will have the logo introduced at the 2006. Only 175 are available for sale.

Also see the one-of-a-kind Red Wing Stoneware chip-and-dip set being sold in a silent auction. This "only one produced" will be awarded at 1 p.m. to the highest bidder.

Hear live music in the band shell from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. by the Sudden Lovelies and 1 to 3:30 p.m. from 2 O'ClockJump.

Art in East Park is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is presented by the Zumbrota Area Arts Council and sponsored in part by the Zumbrota Economic Development Authority.

The grand parade sponsored in part by the Zumbrota Rotary Club begins at 6 p.m. and features six high school bands competing for trophies.

Following the parade is a VFW Street Dance with Mountain Ash. Tickets are $3.

Round out the evening with a 10 p.m. fireworks display.

Treat dad on Father's Day morning with a pancake breakfast at the Zumbrota VFW.

"The parade and fireworks are a real big draw to people," King said. "There are good bit of people coming from out of town - making it a great opportunity for us to highlight ours."
