Church, history society receive state grants

The Minnesota Historical Society has awarded grants to two local entities.

Friends of St. Rose of Kenyon will receive $6,265 to create interpretative signage for Church of St. Rose of Lima in Cherry Grove Township. The money will go toward designing, producing and installing a historical marker for the church, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Goodhue County Historical Society will receive two grants. The first is worth $10,000 toward phase two in acquiring Goodhue County newspapers on Microfilm. The History Center will add 126 rolls of microfilmed newspapers to make primary records more accessible to the public. The second grant is for a $267 Oral History Association conference scholarship, which will provide professional development for staff and board members at the national Oral History Association conference in Minneapolis, Oct. 4-8, 2017.

The state society's executive council voted June 1 to award 56 grants to 50 recipients. The Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Small Grants or up to $10,000 each totaled $415,269 in 29 counties for the quarter starting June 1, 2017.
