Goodhue County Health and Human Services Deputy Director Mary Heckman was honored with the 2017 Minnesota Department of Health Commissioner's Award for Distinguished Service in Community Health Services. Commissioner of Health Dr. Ed Ehlinger presented the award during the Community Health Conference Sept. 27 in Breezy Point, Minn.

"This is a great honor for Ms. Heckman's lifelong dedication to improve community health and her work with Goodhue County Health and Human Services," said Jason Majerus, Goodhue County Health and Human Services board chair. "It is also important to note that this is the first time anyone from Goodhue County has received this award."

The Commissioner's Award for Distinguished Service in Community Health Services was created in 1992 to acknowledge long-term contributions, involvement, achievement and commitment to Community Health Services. The recipients of this award have demonstrated long-term commitment, and have contributed to advancement within the public health field.

"This is a well-deserved award for Mary's career and contributions in Public Health and HHS," said Nina Arneson, Goodhue County Health and Human Services director. "Our agency would not be what it is today without Mary's tireless, behind the scenes work on our mission, organizational improvements and efficiencies."
