Pam Fontem of Red Wing joined a team of volunteers with American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network on a trip to Washington, D.C., Sept. 11-14 for the annual Leadership Summit and Lobby Day.

Fontem, a phone triage nurse with Mayo Clinic, spoke with Minnesota lawmakers and staff about the importance of cancer research and the proposed Palliative Care and Hospice Education and Training Act.

“This act would provide the training for doctors and nurses to make sure (palliative care) is in more rural communities,” she said.

Fontem said she got involved with American Cancer Society through its Relay for Life fundraiser before moving to advocacy efforts after her father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
