Fight leukemia by sailing Lake Pepin

Body:

Lake City Yacht Club will sponsor its annual Go Sailing for Leukemia fundraiser Saturday, July 29, and Sunday, July 30, Last year's event raised more than $15,000, with 100 of the proceeds going to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of America.

In 1997, the club was looking for a way to give something back to the community. The club also wanted to support one of its members who died of leukemia that year. This fundraiser was seen as a way to do both.

Club members invite the public to "sail beautiful Lake Pepin and save lives."

Blood cancer fast facts include:

• More than 1.2 million people in the U.S. are living with or are in remission from a blood cancer.

• Since the early 1960s, five-year survival rates for many blood cancer patients have doubled, tripled or even quadrupled.

• In 1964, the five-year survival rate for children with the most commonly diagnosed leukemia was 3 percent. Today it is 90 percent

The Lake City event continues to grow. Organizers said more 500 participants and 100 volunteers participated in 2016.

Between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day, club members will offer sailboat rides to the public from the Lake City Marina. The suggested donation is $20 for adults and $15 for children. However, donations in any amount will be accepted. Rides will last approximately 90 minutes.
