The new Behrens Family Jazz Scholarship will send a Red Wing High School student to a camp-like workshop this summer.
"For a number of years, it has been a goal of mine to offer an annual scholarship to RWHS students. It was important the scholarship would relate to music and specifically jazz, as my interest in the art form developed from opportunities afforded me by some special teacher influences while attending RWHS," Bob Behren said.
One student will be selected to learn jazz performance skills and improve artistic quality by attending the one-week, in-residence Summer Jazz Workshop at McNally Smith College of Music in St. Paul. The dates at June 23-29.
The recipient will choose one of the following specialty areas of jazz instruction: vocals, guitar, keyboard, drums, bass, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone or strings.
"My children and my extended family were also involved with music at RWHS, some of whom became professional musicians and most of whom developed an appreciation for jazz," Behrens said. "Jazz really allows creativity while expressing emotions with music, a liberty not always present in other genres. My family hopes this scholarship will help inspire local music students and offer motivation to continue performing throughout their lives."
Only current students in ninth, 10th or 11th grades and enrolled full-time at RWHS during the 2017-18 school year are eligible to apply.
The application deadline is May 7. Contact the school for more information.
