Party at the bridge
The streets of Zumbrota will be bustling this weekend as the Covered Bridge Music & Arts Festival returns with an array of activities — many of them free of charge — for people of all ages and interests.
The annual community event kicks off 5 p.m. Thursday with Rock the Block, an evening of sidewalk sales, food and entertainment along Main Street in the historic downtown district.
The party continues Friday with a free screening 7:30 p.m. of Pixar’s animated hit “Up” at the historic State Theatre, 96 E. Fourth St., presented by the Zumbrota Area Arts Council and Goodhue County Chapter of Thrivent Financial.
A few blocks north, Zumbrota VFW will host a free street dance featuring the Fields 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. on East First Street.
From sunrise to sunset, Saturday will be packed with sports tournaments, a street market and live entertainment options.
One of the biggest attractions is the ZAAC’s Art in East Park event open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Coordinator Brenda Lerum said the event, now in its 15th year, includes food vendors and more than 30 artist booths.
As attendees make their way through the park, they’ll hear musician Annie Lawler perform 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and the folk-pop stylings of Patchouli 1 to 3 p.m.
New this year is a free sand art project for children. Supplies are limited so Lerum suggests families arrive early.
The day is rounded out by a parade and marching band competition beginning at 6 p.m. on Main Street. This year’s grand marshal will be Zumbrota native Gus Bradley, head coach of the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars.
Of course no outdoor summer celebration would be complete without some fireworks, which are scheduled for 10 p.m. Saturday in Covered Bridge Park. The display is sponsored by Bank of Zumbrota and Midwest Fabrication & Supply.
Other free highlights on Saturday include:
•Zumbrota Quilt Group show, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., First Congregational Church, 455 East Ave.
•Zumbrota Area Historical Society open house, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., 55 E. Third St.
•Everett Smithson Band, Zydeco dance and harmonica lessons, starts 1 p.m., Zumbrota Public Library, 100 West Ave.
•Street dance featuring JT & the Gunslingers, 8 p.m. to 1 a.m., VFW
Music continues into Sunday with a band festival noon to 5 p.m. in the East Park Band Shell. The concert includes Zumbrota Community Band, Fridley City Band and German Band, Shoreview Northern Lights Variety Band and Brio Brass Swing.
