Over the river and through the woods

Children can meet St. Nick at the Bank of Alma in Pepin from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Friday Dec. 6. See Santa at several locations throughout next weekend’s 100 Miles of Christmas Celebration.

The garland is hung, lights are lit, carols are ringing and a holiday season celebration blankets the Great River Region next weekend.

Mississippi Valley Partners presents 100 Miles of Christmas Celebration, featuring events throughout the area that kick off Friday Dec. 6 and wrap up Sunday Dec. 8.

What to find

Red Wing: Tour local historic holiday-decorated homes at the annual Bed & Breakfasts of Red Wing Holiday Tour from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday Dec. 7. Enjoy tastings from local restaurants at each stop. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door.

Participating locations include Golden Lantern Inn, Candlelight Inn, Moondance Inn, Octagon House, Round Barn Farm, Pratt Taber Inn and the St. James Hotel.

Hastings: Explore a Victorian-inspired holiday event at the LeDuc Historic Estate. Guided tours of the elegantly decorated house and special programs are offered.

A four-course Victorian holiday dinner is set for Sunday Dec. 8. Call 651- 437-7055 for prices and reservations.

Lake City: Make holiday memories during the weekend long “It’s a Wonderful Life in Lake City.” Activities include a holiday arts and crafts fair at the Lincoln High School; 5K Reindeer Run/Walk, a Santa parade and more.

Wabasha: Have lunch with Santa at Slippery’s from noon to 2 p.m. featuring a build-your-own mac and cheese bar, decorate cookies at the Anderson House Hotel Heartfelt Holiday event.

And don’t miss viewing eagles at Harriet’s Open House & Optics Expo at the National Eagle Center.

Kellogg: Santa will make an appearance at LARK Toys from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. both Saturday Dec. 7 and Sunday Dec. 8.

SVJ Creative Designs provides one of its famous sleigh displays with Santa and his reindeer.

Alma, Wis.: See Christmas from new point of view during the Alma holiday open house weekend from Friday Dec. 6 to Sunday Dec. 8. The historic rivertown offers gifts, holiday refreshments and a festive ambiance.

St. John’s Christmas Bazaar is open Saturday and Sunday.

Nelson, Wis.: Forget Me Not Gifts hosts a Christmas Open House with cider, cookies and special savings.

Pepin: Enjoy a “Suessical” weekend as the community supports Pepin Area School’s production of the holiday musical “Suessical.” Activities throughout the weekend include a cookie walk, glass ornament blowing at BNOX Gold & Iron, a visit from St. Nick, wine tasting at Villa Bellezza Winery, live music at Breakwater and several performances of the musical at the school.

Stockholm: Country and Christmas collide in the celebration next weekend. Treat your taste buds for a special holiday pie flight tasting at the one-and-only Stockholm Pie Company. Wine tastings will be held at Stockholm General.

Local musicians the Ditch Lilies play live at Abode Gallery.

Also visiting is author and poet Mary Logue, who will be signing her new poetry book “Trees” and children’s book “Sleep like a Tiger.”

Saturday wraps up with the “A Hot Flash Christmas” concert at 7 p.m. at Widespot Performing Arts Center.

Maiden Rock: The village hosts an Old-fashioned Country Christmas, Saturday Dec. 7.

The day kicks off with a pancake breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m.; meet Santa’s elves at the Hiawatha National Bank; take a ride in a horse-drawn wagon in Village Park and see Santa himself at the Maiden Rock Creamery. Don’t forget your camera.

Bay City: Flat Pennies will be opened, decorated and serving goodies. Try a holiday ice cream pie.
