Community briefs: Benefits and fundraisers

Lorentz benefit will be Sept. 14

A public benefit for Brian Lorentz is planned for Sept. 14 at the Cannon Falls VFW. Lorentz was injured in a motorcycle accident almost a year ago. He is still unable to return to normal activities, including working.

There will be a silent auction as well as a live auction featuring items such as a baseball signed by Twins pitcher Caleb Thielbar, a deer hunting excursion, a four-night stay in Branson and more. The silent auction will be 5 to 6:30 p.m. with the live auction following.

A motorcycle ride/poker run will begin at the VFW parking lot at 11 a.m. There also are "Life's a Ride" T-shirts available at Cannon Valley Video.

An account for donations has been set up at First Farmers and Merchants Bank.

Fair and posse fundraiser is Sept. 21

The Goodhue County Fair Association and Goodhue County Sheriff's Mounted Posse fundraiser is planned for Sept. 21 at the Goodhue County Fairgrounds in Zumbrota.

Dinner will be from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and drawings are set for 9 p.m. The grand prize is a 2013 Ford Fiesta. Other prizes include a flat screen television and $1,400 in cash.

A $100 donation includes two prime rib meals, beverages for the evening and entry in the prize drawings.

Mallet fundraiser is Oct. 5

A charity golf tournament is planned to pay medical and funeral expenses for a 5-year-old Cannon Falls boy who was was killed after being crushed by a skid loader Aug. 22. The boy's mother did not have insurance at the time of the accident.

The Matthew Scott Mallett Benefit Golf Classic debuts Oct. 5 at Hidden Green Golf Course in Hastings. This kid-friendly event will feature bounce houses and games, as well as music, silent auction and a punch prize game.

Golf flag sponsorship is $40 for regular holes and $60 for competition holes. Hole sponsorships are $100, $250, $500 and $1,000. The fee to play in the tournament is $75 and includes a meal.

Event organizers also are asking for donations of food, beverages and silent auction items.

Swenning benefit planned Sept. 28

A craft fair and benefit will be held Sept. 28 to support the family of Chris Swenning, a Red Wing High School graduate, who was killed in a rollover crash Aug. 24.

The craft fair runs 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minn. The benefit, including a bake sale and silent auction, is 5 p.m. to 12 a.m. at Pappy's Bar and Grill, also in Marshall, Minn.

Pregnancy clinic holds fundraiser

First Choice Clinic, a local non-profit pregnancy clinic, will hold its annual fall fundraising banquet 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday Sept. 12 on the second floor of Cornerstone Church, downtown Red Wing.

David Bereit, director of 40 Days of Life, an anti-abortion campaign, will speak at the event.
