Classic boats coming to town

The Classic Glastron Owners of Minnesota and Western Wisconsin will meet Aug. 15-18 at Island Campground across the river from Red Wing. Spokesman David Pankonin of Lino Lakes, Minn., expect close to 150 people and more than 65 boats.

At around 11 a.m. Saturday the group will parade the boats slowly past the Red Wing waterfront en route to Hok-Si-La Park in Lake City.

Help clear Barn Bluff

Friends of the Bluffs will hold a Barn Bluff work day at 1 p.m. Sunday Aug. 18. Meet at the parking area and help clear encroaching plants from the South and Prairie trails. Bring gloves, water, sturdy shoes. Some tools will be provided, or bring your own.

Sculpture show opens at Maltery

Sculpture artist Jim Williams is displaying more than a dozen pieces at the old Fleischmann Malting Co. building, 110 Broad St. Each sculpture was made using recycled materials from the building itself.

Doors open 12 to 5 p.m. Sundays through Sept. 1. Williams will be on hand at each showing. The event is free and open to the public.

Master Gardener classes begin Sept. 10

University of Wisconsin Extension will offer Master Gardener volunteer training starting Sept. 10 at the St. Joseph Town Hall in Houlton, Wis.

Topics to be covered include plant diseases and insects, woody trees and shrubs, basic botany, soils and composting, lawn care, weeds, organic growing, houseplants, vegetables, fruit and wildlife.

Classes will be Tuesdays Sept. 10, 17, 24 and Oct. 1, 8, 22, 29 and Nov. 12 and Saturdays Oct. 12 and Nov. 2.

Participants receive 36 hours of training and in exchange must provide 24 hours of community volunteer service related to plant science and/or gardening.
