Spotlight: Sheldon Theatre's silver screen

Body:

Classic films, cult films, iconic films that resonate or bring back memories — the Sheldon Theatre has a long history as a movie house. The programing focus today is on live performances, but films regularly are back in the mix.

"The experience of seeing a movie on a really big screen in a large auditorium is both rare and special these days," Executive Director Bonnie Schock said.

The reels keep rolling two more nights as the 2017 Sheldon summer movie festival wraps up. Both are part of the Adventure & Thrills series.

The first is "Jurassic Park," Steven Spielberg's 1993 film based on Michael Crichton's 1990 science fiction novel. Showtime is 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24.

On Thursday, Aug. 31, the 1960 classic "Psycho" comes to the big screen. Alfred Hitchcock directed this low-budget to mixed reviews. Moviegoers, however, flooded the theaters and the critics had to reconsider. "Psycho" based on the novel Robert Bloch published the year before is now considered among Hitchcock's best films.

"This summer, with a return of regular movie screenings, we've seen double the attendance of last year. We're witnessing people attending in groups, talking about the events excitedly in advance on social media, and making an event of it to see a movie they have loved for years or one they've heard about but never actually seen," Schock said.

Theater staff members also have seen people sharing films with the next generation, as parents or grandparents take the young people in their lives to see a movie they treasure.

"That's my favorite part of it — watching folks sharing something with friends and family in a special place like the Sheldon," she said.

"Finally, we see people at our film events who don't regularly attend live events. That's extremely important to us, to be a trusted resource for everyone, to provide opportunities for the full range of interests and tastes in our community to gather here and share in the power of storytelling," Schock concluded.

For that reason, the Sheldon will offer a movie approximately once a month as part of the 2017-18 season. The films will be announced mid-September.

Tickets for "Jurassic Park" and "Psycho" are $3.50 for youths, $5 for adults. For more information, call 651-388-8700 or visit www.sheldontheatre.org.
