No time for games

Still without costumes, Red Wing High School students adjust to performing on the Sheldon's stage a little over a week before opening night of “The Pajama Game.” (Republican Eagle photos by John R. Russett)1 / 2

A 10-minute break during rehearsal Wednesday evening was anything but for stage manager Tori Miller.

Miller orchestrated a scene change, telling people where to place tables and chairs on the Sheldon Theatre stage, how many chairs were needed and even answering questions as to where the person was who ran the soundboard.

“It’s very, very chaotic,” Miller said. “I do this all night every night.”

Miller said she usually gets to rehearsal for “The Pajama Game” – the high school’s spring musical – close to an hour before everyone else does, as well as working from home doing anything from ordering T-shirts to mapping out the stage for scene changes.

Miller credits assistant stage manager Rhett Waller with keeping her calm and focused throughout the craziness, adding working with a good crew is essential because “you can’t plan for everything.”

By the time opening night rolls around Miller said all the hard work and time is definitely worth it.

“It’s awesome” she said of seeing everything come together.

“The Pajama Game” is based on the novel “7 ½ cents” by Richard Bissell, with music and lyrics by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross and follows the labor troubles in a pajama factory where workers are fighting for a raise.

The play is directed by Sean Dowse, executive director of the Sheldon Theatre.

Tickets can be purchased online at, by calling the Sheldon Theatre at 651-388-8700, or in person at the Sheldon Theatre box office.
