Sheldon Brass Band to premiere composition

The Sheldon Brass Band will give the world premiere performance of a new composition by Minnesota composer Glen Newton at the annual holiday concerts Friday Nov. 23 and Saturday Nov. 24.

The new musical work is a rare genre because it was conceived as a Christmas song for vocalist with British-style brass band.

"'Christmas is Just 'Round the Corner' paints a happy picture of a family reunited at the holidays after an overseas military deployment," Newton said.

Newton is a third-generation composer. Whereas his mother and grandfather were both known for their compositions for piano and violin, he focuses on music for wind instruments and jazz ensembles.

Newton began writing works for instrumental and vocal ensembles in sixth grade. Since then, his compositions have been performed by concert bands, orchestras, vocal ensembles, jazz bands and brass ensembles in the United States and abroad.

Twin Cities vocalist Debbie O'Keefe will be featured on this song as well as other selections.

The concerts will be 7:30 p.m. Nov. 23 and 2 p.m. Nov. 24. Tickets are $17.50 for adults and $11.50 for students and are available at the Sheldon Theatre Box Office.
