Applications sought for sheriff's scholarship

The Minnesota State Sheriffs' Association Board of Directors is seeking applications for its 2013 Law Enforcement Scholarship Program.

Fifteen $600 scholarships will be awarded this year. Applicants must be enrolled in a mandated POST skills program, in their second year of a two-year law enforcement program or in their third or fourth year of a four year criminal justice program.

Applications must be submitted by Oct. 15.

Bloodmobile heads to Pine Island

The American Red Cross will conduct a blood drive 1 to 7 p.m. Sept. 16 at the Pine Island American Legion Hall, 108 First Ave. S. All blood types are needed.

Clean up Coon Hill

Friends of the Bluffs will hold a work day starting at 10 a.m. Saturday Sept. 14 on the Billingsford/Thomforde conservation area, also known as Coon Hill. Meet at the Sumac Drive entrance. Wear sturdy shoes, gloves, sunscreen and insect repellant, and bring a water bottle. People also may bring tools; some will be available.

Tree care walk coming to Red Wing

A walking lecture titled "Care of our Shade Trees — Identifying Health vs. Stressed Trees" will be presented by arborist Dennis Dick 7 p.m. Sept. 16.

Dick will lead a tour around downtown Red Wing pointing out stressed trees and how to evaluate them.

The tour starts at First Presbyterian Church, 503 W. Sixth St., and is free and open to the public.
