With the days growing shorter, grayer and colder, it's easy for many in Minnesota to fall into a seasonal funk this time of year. But others turn to tried and true methods designed to lift their spirits and bring them through the long, chilled months ahead.
"Winter Solstice,” a new holiday CD, is being released this weekend by Patchouli as an instrumental Terra Guitarra project. Patchouli is a Maiden Rock acoustic duo that tours nationally in addition to performing throughout the region.
Greg Schmotzer and Chris Swarbrick repeated as winners of the multiblock ice sculpture competition at the St. Paul Winter Carnival, and Schmotzer retained championship status in the individual block sculpture as well.
Greg Schmotzer uses an angle grinder to sand the surface of “The Pearl,” this year’s entry in the Winter Carnival multi-block ice sculpture contest. Schmotzer and Chris Swarbrick’s sculpture is a ship wreck scene featuring a mermaid reaching for a pearl. Both men are from the Red Wing area.
