The number of Class C teams in the Classic Cannon Valley League has doubled to six in one year's time. The Northfield Knights dropped from Class B to Class C before the season and the league added the Lake City Serpents and the Wanamingo Jacks.
When Tom Gwaltney moved to the area years ago, he observed how the baseball program in Red Wing operated and decided he wanted to model the Lake City baseball organization after the one just up Highway 61.
Lake City adjusted well from the slower pitching they saw from Plainview Sunday, according to Serpents coach Scott Gwaltney. The patience paid off as they went on to explode for 11 runs in the middle innings, including six in the sixth inning.
