ST. PAUL — Luke Johnson was primed for a top finish in the shot put at Friday’s Class AA state track and field meet at Hamline University. The fact he dropped two places in the final round — from second to fourth — hardly dampened spirits afterward.

Girls track: Boldt, Hovey move on to state 
LAKEVILLE, Minn. — Red Wing sophomore Lauren Boldt posted a season-best time in the 100-meter dash at the Missota Conference meet. However, she remained on the outside looking in with regard to the automatic qualifier for the state meet.
She managed to cut just enough time at Saturday’s Section 1AA competition to earn her first state berth.

LAKEVILLE, Minn. — Red Wing junior Kim Hovey captured the top spot in the discus - and thus a state tournament berth - on the first day of the Section 1AA meet with a school-record toss of 141 feet, 1 inch.

Boys track: Johnson headed for state 
Luke Johnson advanced to the state meet Thursday at Lakeville South High School by exceeding the qualifying standard by three inches. His toss of 54 feet, 7 inches was a little underwhelming by his own standards. He entered with a seed distance of 60-9 3/4.
