Area notebook: Klein ends career at Division III championship 
Red Wing’s Emily Klein went 1-for-3 in Gustavus' loss, while scoring a run. The center fielder accounted for all the team’s runs, as she recorded an RBI single in the third inning, stole second and third base, and scored on a throwing error by Coe College.

Softball notebook: Suddenly all smiles 
Red Wing coach Cheryl Borgen was as frustrated as her team three short weeks ago. Nearly every player had settled into a troubling routine: swing, miss, look at Borgen for signs. She saw resigned defeat etched on her players’ faces more often than not.
Seemingly powerless to halt the slide, Borgen might as well have been an extra in Bill Murray’s classic “Groundhog Day.”

Notebook: Bombers visit the capitol 
Cannon Falls High School teacher Heather Loeschke introduced a handful of students to the “We the People” competition four years ago.
Those same students, who are now seniors, dethroned perennial state champion Duluth East in December to earn the right to represent Minnesota in Washington, D.C., on the national stage.
