Commentary: Local option sales tax - just what is this?
Red Wing residents are being asked to determine whether a local option sales tax is a good idea. On Nov. 6, the general election ballot will include a question asking voters to decide whether an additional half-cent sales tax should be collected. A greater than 50 percent “yes” vote of the voters who vote would approve the referendum question.

Football: Dream season comes to an end for Lake City
ROCHESTER – Lake City’s two losses this season came by a total of 13 points. And if not for a few bad breaks Friday night against Rochester Lourdes, the Tigers might be headed to their first state tournament since 2001. Instead, Lake City’s season was ended with a 20-14 loss to the top-ranked and top-seeded Eagles in the Section 1AAA finale at the Rochester Regional Sports Stadium.

Letter: Schmit will put voters first
I met Matt Schmit 10 years ago following my own election to the Minnesota Senate. As vice chair of the Education Finance Committee, I was an experienced lawmaker looking for help getting through an ominous 2003 session. Matt was an aspiring graduate student looking for some hands-on experience in public policy. We made a great team, and it’s been my pleasure to watch Matt launch his professional career ever since.

Ted Seifert is not the county commissioner we want. He has danced around the frac sand mining issue, waiting for the election to pass so he doesn’t have to answer to the people. He’s a good politician, but he’s not a good representative.
