This dish really stacks up
For Midwesterners who love to eat food fresh from the garden, this is the best time of year. Local gardens are teaming with bright heavy tomatoes, slender green beans, colossal cabbages, a variety of peppers, zucchini almost as long as my arms – all kinds of vegetables – fresh and full of flavor.

Pakora: India's version of onion rings
When my husband and I travel, we find our stops seem to be all about food. One of our favorite activities when we get out of town is exploring restaurants that are new to us. Ethnic restaurants are a favorite.

Letter: Mining Study Committee wasn't up to the task
At its recent meeting, the Goodhue County Planning Advisory Commission punted regarding the proposed mining ordinance. Despite seeing over 200 residents packed into the room and despite hearing the thoughtful and well-researched concerns from at least 40 of them to — at the very least — extend the moratorium, the commission seemed incapable of making a decision and so … it punted. It decided to table the issue until its next meeting.

Exploring the caves
Sorin’s Bluff, also known as Memorial Park, offers 268 acres of hiking, biking, picnicking and some of the best views to be found in the area. The park was developed in the 1920s as a World War I memorial. Sorin’s Bluff was donated to the city after mining of the limestone was halted due to the destruction of the bluff.

Letter: County should extend moratorium
Nearly a year ago, Goodhue County put in place a moratorium to evaluate whether the current county mining ordinance was sufficient to control silica sand mines like the large (and largely unregulated) operations springing up all over Wisconsin.

Bucket list: Find the historic markers
There’s plenty to see along highways 61 and 35 as they border Lake Pepin. Restaurants, bars, museums and shops — not to mention the gorgeous views of the lake itself — are enough to keep any road tripper occupied.

We all scream faux ice cream
I had my eye on an old ice cream maker at an antique shop a couple of weeks ago. I found it when I was crouching on the floor digging through a cardboard box filled with an array of treasures someone must have dropped off at the shop. It was an old hand-cranked model with a deep narrow tin inside of a round wooden container, with room for packing in plenty of salt and ice.
