Highlights from 2009 Pierce County Fair meat animal auction

Eighty 4-H and FFA members sold beef, hogs, lambs and fowl at the Aug. 14th fair auction

  • Corey Bates, a member of the Elmwood FFA, shows off his Grand Champion Holstein steer prior to Friday night's Animal Auction at the fair. Corey, the son of Tim & Lynette Bates, posted a 3.44-pound rate of gain on the steer. Sailer's Locker in Elmwood purchased the 1,376-pound steer for $1.50/lb.
  • Jordan Brown of Ellsworth, daughter of Brad Brown, ushered her 1,336-pound cross-bred steer "Petey" toward the auction ring Friday evening. Brown, a member of the Country Partners 4-H Club, won top honors at the fair with her animal. Buyer was Western Wisconsin Nutrition at $1.55/lb.
  • Toby Lillie, son of Judy Lillie and a member of the Helping Hands 4-H club, leads his grand champion Duroc hog around the auction ring on Friday evening. Toby's pig was purchased by Consolidated Energy Cooperative for $1.95/lb.
  • Prior to the start of Friday evening's Meat Animal Auction, fair coordinator Ann Webb presented Rose Mary and Javan Kastberg with a special plaque calling attention to the late Steve Kastberg's many years of support and help at the annual 4-H Meat Animal Auction. Kastberg died suddenly last September.
  • Tana O'Keefe, daughter of Jim & Amy O'Keefe and a member of the Valley Eagles 4-H club, Spring Valley, earned top honors at the fair wit her 142-pound lamb. She was fourth in line at Friday's meat animal auction. Her lamb sold to B & B Supply for $1.85/lb.
  • Tyler O'Keefe of the Spring Valley FFA, shows off his York-cross hog Friday at the meat animal auction. Tyler won reserve grand champion with his pig. The hog sold to Countryside Coop for $1.95/lb.
  • Samantha Rohl, daughter of Mike and Amanda Rohl of Ellsworth, shows her reserve grand champion Holstein prior to Friday night's auction. Samantha is a member of the Ellsworth FFA. Buyer of the steer was Loberg Law Office at $1.45/lb.
  • Caleb Dressen, a member of the Royal Rushers and son of Jim & Pam Dressen, poses with his reserve champion lamb. Caleb's lamb sold to Repro Quest for $4/lb.
