She was born Oct. 2, 1929, in Baker, Mont., to Clair Keith Willis and Elizabeth Sigrid (Peterson) Willis. Betty lived in Rhame, N.D., until 5-1/2 years old when her family moved to Vasa, Minn., where she grew up on a farm. Betty graduated from high school in Red Wing, Minn., in 1947.
