Donald Minton Safe, 88, Red Wing, died Friday, March 1, at Seminary Home.

Donald Minton Safe, 88, Red Wing, died Friday, March 1, at Seminary Home.

He was born June 18, 1924, in Vasa Township, the son of Minton and Lily (Pearson) Safe. He attended school in Vasa Township and was a 1942 graduate of Red Wing Central High School. On Oct. 2, 1954, he married Bernadine A. Rother at St. Mathias Church in Hampton, Minn. They farmed in the Spring Garden area for 3 years before moving to the farm in Vasa in 1957.

In addition to farming, Donald played stand-up bass for many years, playing live music at many radio stations from Rochester to the Twin Cities including KAAA, which is now KWNG, in Red Wing. He played music for the first Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon in Rochester. He also did independent trucking and drove for many years for S.B. Foot Tanning Co., Wilson Trucking, and retired from Will-Do Trucking in Red Wing. Bernadine died on Sept. 3, 1997. He was a member of St. Columbkill Catholic Church in Belle Creek, the Red Men Club, and local men's choruses. He enjoyed farming, visiting with friends and neighbors, cutting weeds in road ditches, truck driving, and attending lutefisk church suppers as well as preparing it at home. The family recalls how much he enjoyed fishing and spending time at the cabin with family and friends. They also remember his love for coffee, which he drank out of a saucer; "Saucer" also became his CB handle when he drove truck.

Survivors include one daughter, Pat (Dan) Banitt of Goodhue; four sons, Don (Judy) Safe of Goodhue, Bernard, Dale, and Marvin (Angie) Safe, all of Red Wing; one sister, Dorothy Lohmann of Zumbrota; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bernadine; and one sister, Lily Marie Safe.

Mass of the Resurrection will be 11 a.m. Monday, March 4, at St. Columbkill Catholic Church, Belle Creek, rural Goodhue, with Fathers Michael Tix and Jim Gorman officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 12-4 p. m. Sunday, March 3, at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel in Red Wing, and for 1 hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to Mayo Clinic Health System - Red Wing Hospice or to the church.
