Marjorie Charlotte Zemke, 93, of Red Wing, formerly of Goodhue, died Saturday, Feb. 9, at St. Brigid’s at Hi-Park.
Marjorie Charlotte Zemke, 93, of Red Wing, formerly of Goodhue, died Saturday, Feb. 9, at St. Brigid’s at Hi-Park.
Marjorie was born May 8, 1919, in Bellechester, Minn., the daughter of Fred and Sophia (Siebe) Kahl. She attended District 101 country school and graduated in 1939 from Red Wing Central High School. Following high school, she worked as an operator at the telephone company in Red Wing. On Sept. 30, 1944, she married Burton Zemke at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Goodhue. The couple farmed in rural Goodhue. Burton died July 29, 1961, and the family moved into Goodhue. She worked in the kitchen at Goodhue School until her retirement at the age of 65. Marjorie lived at the senior apartments in Goodhue until 1987 when she moved to Jordan Towers in Red Wing.
She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Red Wing and also was an honorary member of the Goodhue Area Historical Society. She enjoyed playing cards and bingo at Jordan Towers. She also enjoyed knitting and completing word find puzzles.
Marjorie is survived by her daughter Carol (Charles) Voth of Goodhue; sons, Duane (Lynne) Zemke of Poulsbo, Wash., and Lyle (Shirley) Zemke of Red Wing; five grandchildren, Shelley Hollwager, Kim Higgins, Chad Pechacek, Tina Johnston, and Aimee Strauss; six great-grandchildren, Gabrielle Hollwager, Elle Higgins, Brenna Higgins, Meagan Johnston, Kelsey Johnston, and Charlie Strauss; sister Marion Lemmerman of Lake City; and sister-in-law Louise Kahl of Red Wing.
She was preceded in death by her husband; daughter Barbara Pechacek; siblings Verena Wieck, Elward Kahl, Willis Kahl; and an infant grandson.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Red Wing with Reverend Todd Engel officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Goodhue. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, and also for 1 hour prior to the service at church on Wednesday.
