Russell Arnold Carlson, 83, of Red Wing, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Jan. 8.

Russell Arnold Carlson, 83, of Red Wing, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Jan. 8.

He was born Sept. 16, 1929, in Red Wing, the son of Guybert Lee and Lillian (Gunterhack) Carlson. He was a 1948 graduate of Red Wing Central High School. He joined the Minnesota National Guard and then the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean Conflict. He married Vera Cordes on Aug. 22, 1953, at West Florence Lutheran Church. He did carpentry work and then worked at SB Foot Tannery for 22 years, retiring in 1991.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hay Creek and the Leo C. Peterson American Legion Post #54. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, woodworking, meeting with his friends for coffee and cards at Dressen's. He enjoyed watching sports of any kind and was a diehard Minnesota Twins fan. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Vera; his children, Dean (Diane) Carlson, James (Cindy) Carlson, Denise (Jerry) Holm, and Bruce (Jennifer) Carlson, all of Red Wing; grandchildren, Kelly Jo Carlson, Greg (Kristi) Carlson, Ryan (Shelly) Holm, Kevin Holm, Nicholas, Katie, and Stacy Carlson, Brittney and Travis Carlson; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Alice Ash of Rochester; and many other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Violet Dietz; one brother, Roger Carlson; and one grandson, Jacob Carlson.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 14, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, with Reverend Lowell Sorenson officiating. Burial with military honors by Leo C. Peterson Post #54 will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, and on Monday for 1 hour prior to the service at the church.
