Mary Ellen (Ortscheid) Campbell of Yuma, Ariz., formerly of Red Wing, died on Nov. 8 at the Lighthouse of Waconia, Minn.
She was born July 4, 1919, in Cuba City, Wis., to Joseph and Teresa (McDonald) Ortscheid. She was raised and attended school in Winnebago, Ill. In May 1940, Mary graduated from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Ill., with a teaching degree. She married Fairman Campbell Oct. 2, 1940, in Pecatonica, Ill. Mary taught in various states, including Illinois, Arizona, and Minnesota. Mary completed her professional career and retired from the Red Wing Correctional Facility in 1974 after 10 years of being a reading tutor and librarian.
Mary was a woman who had a deep faith in God and a devout devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. She loved and was intensely proud of her entire family. After Mary and her husband Fairman retired in 1976, they traveled (via their RV) throughout the 49 states, flew to Hawaii, and drove the entire length of Mexico. She loved to talk, laugh, work hard, played numerous musical instruments, and was a self-taught painter. In the summer of 2007, Mary moved back to Minnesota to live with her family until October 2010 when, after two hospitalizations, she moved to the Lighthouse in Waconia.
She is survived by seven daughters, Marion (George) Willis of Red Wing, Joyce (Theodore) Erickson of St. Paul, Minn., Theresa (Ronald) Stinson of Long Beach, Calif.; Patricia (John - deceased) Smith of Columbia Heights, Minn., Mary Margaret (Steve) Reimann of Glendale, Ariz., Mary Cecilia (Peter) Van Duynhoven of Mankato, Minn., and Marie (Dale) Czapiewiski of Winona, Minn.; eight sons, James (Cheryl) Campbell of Leaf River, Ill., Wayne (Sue) Campbell of Kingston, Ill., John (Karen) Campbell of Chaska, Minn., Joseph (Avis) Campbell of Red Wing, William (Susan Bushnell) Campbell of Prescott Valley, Ariz., Michael (Cynthia) Campbell of Shakopee, Minn., Thomas (Ann) Campbell of Red Wing, and Steven (Phyllis) Campbell of Richmond, Minn. Mary is also survived by 65 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fairman, on Aug. 20, 1990; infant son Jerome; daughter Barbara Smith; and sister Margaret Benz.
A Mass of Resurrection will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 12, at the Church of St. Joseph in Red Wing, with Fr. Thomas M. Kommers presiding. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. The visitation will be from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson - Mahn Chapel in Red Wing, with a rosary at 8:30 p.m., and 1 hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to the St. John's Neumann Catholic Church in Yuma.
