Robert Joseph "Bob" Gadient, age 89, of Goodhue, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, Sept. 30, at the Seminary Home in Red Wing.
Robert Joseph 'Bob' Gadient, age 89, of Goodhue, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, Sept. 30, at the Seminary Home in Red Wing.
Bob was born on Nov. 19, 1922, in Goodhue Township, the son of David and Alfreda (Matter) Gadient. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Columbkill Catholic Church, where he continued his lifelong membership. He graduated from Goodhue High School in 1941 and went on to service with the Merchant Marines during World War II. He married Berdell Buck on Nov. 28, 1945, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Red Wing. They farmed in Goodhue and Belle Creek Townships until retiring in 1995.
Bob was a member of the 3rd degree Knights of Columbus - Bellechester Council and 4th degree Knights of Columbus - Red Wing. He was a life member of the VFW Post #5727 in Zumbrota and a member of the American Legion Post #598 in Bellechester.
He loved farming and horses, and in his younger years, he enjoyed hunting with his sons. He enjoyed dancing and playing cribbage. He will be remembered most as a man of strong faith and a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved being together as a family and especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow up.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 67 years, Berdell; their 12 children, Bonnie (John) Steffenhagen of Lodi, Wis., Wayne (Brenda) of Goodhue, Barbara (John) Nei of Alexandria, Elizabeth (Kurt) Thomforde and Alan (Nancy), all of Goodhue, Marilyn (Thomas) Richter of Lonsdale, Robert "Bob Jr." (Mary) of Goodhue, Steve (Sue) of Orange Park, Fla., Annette Gadient, Dennis (Sheila), and Andrew (Debbie), all of Goodhue, and Laura (Brian) Sweet of Pensacola Beach, Fla.; 54 grandchildren and 58 great-grandchildren; brothers and sister Fr. Peter Gadient, Regina Morelan, Bill (Kay) Gadient, and Ray (Ruth) Gadient; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Len Lodermeier, Louis Ward, Agnes Gadient, Shirley Gadient, Neta Gadient, John (Nancy) Buck, Joan Moldenhauer, and Ardell (Roy) Flynn; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; eight siblings, Margaret Gadient, Bernard, John, Rosemary Lodermeier, Katherine Ward, Frances Lodermeier, Gerald, and David Jr.; and grandson Cory Joseph Peters.
Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday Oct. 2 at St. Columbkill Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, with visitation from 10-11 a.m., at the church, with Father Bruce Peterson and Father Joseph LaPlant concelebrating. Interment with military honors will follow at the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be grandchildren Ian Sweet, Tony Richter, Weston Gadient, Dustin Gadient, Daniel Steffenhagen, Seth Thomforde, Jed Gadient, Sam Gadient, Jesse Peters, Molly Chapin, Brett Gadient, and Cameron Gadient.
