Earl J. Schafer, 86, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, at Deer Crest in Red Wing.

He was born April 12, 1926, in Goodhue, Minn., the son of Louis and Anna (Diercks) Schafer. Earl grew up in Goodhue and graduated from Red Wing High School. In October of 1950, he married Jane Fjerstad at First Lutheran Church in Red Wing. He spent his entire life in Goodhue farming on the family farm.
In his spare time, he enjoyed volunteering for Faith in Action, Meals on Wheels, the Red Wing Area Food Shelf, and the Evergreen Cemetery Board for many years. He was an active member of Red Wing Seniors, MN Hereford Association, Belvidere Township Supervisors, Toastmasters, Kiwanis, and the Goodhue County Pork Producers. Earl enjoyed reading, telling stories to his grandchildren, and spending time with family.
Earl is survived by his wife, Jane Schafer; two sons, Lowell (Patricia) Schafer of Goodhue, Randy (Donna) Schafer of Foley, Minn.; two daughters, Julie (Rich) DeHart of Spokane, Wash., and Meridith (David) Adomat of Prior Lake, Minn.; ten grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Janet Christopherson and Jane Scheffler; one brother, Roy (Marion) Schafer; and sister-in-law, Eileen Fjerstad.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at First Covenant Church in Red Wing, with Reverend Tim Anderson officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Goodhue. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, and 1 hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to the Alzheimer's Association and First Covenant Church.
