Lyle Herbert Mandelkow, 84, of Red Wing, died Monday, Sept. 3, at his home, with his family by his side, following a brief illness.
Lyle Herbert Mandelkow, 84, of Red Wing, died Monday, Sept. 3, at his home, with his family by his side, following a brief illness.
He was born on March 6, 1928, in Red Wing, to Gustav and Helen (Gielow) Mandelkow. He attended schools in Red Wing. He then served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1950-1952. On Nov. 1, 1952, he married Norma Winberg at Svea Lutheran Church. The couple made their home in Vasa Township where they farmed and he worked at the S.B. Foot Tannery from 1952-1980. After retirement, he worked at Bergquist Company in Cannon Falls and Munson Printing.
He was a member of Vasa Lutheran Church where he served on the church council and cemetery board. Lyle loved his antique tractors. Most of all, he loved spending time with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and the farm animals.
Lyle is survived by his wife, Norma; one daughter, Judy (Ron) Scripture; two sons, Larry (Diane) Mandelkow and Gary Mandelkow; and one daughter-in-law, Terri Mandelkow, all of Red Wing; 11 grandchildren, Mike, Adam, Jeff, Andrew, Courtney, Mitchell, and Chelsey Mandelkow, Angie Metling, Jill Anderson, Aaron and Allison Scripture; and 11 great-grandchildren, Collin Metling, Dylan and Lucas Anderson, Mason, Rylan, Cameron, Tristin, Kylie, Emma, and Tucker Mandelkow, and Sophia Scripture.
Lyle was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Scott, on Feb. 28, 2012; and two brothers, Clarence and Vernon.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, at Vasa Lutheran Church with Reverend Kristi Mitchell officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service at the church on Friday. In lieu of flowers, donations preferred to Vasa Lutheran Church or donor's choice.
