Delma Ruth Rigelman, 87, of Red Wing, died Saturday, Sept. 1, at the Seminary Home.
She was born on Sept. 15, 1924, in Red Wing, to Frederick and Clara (Olson) Chellberg. She graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1942 and then attended Winona State Teachers College, graduating in 1944. She taught school at East Chain, Minn., and Burnside Elementary. On June 25, 1947, she was united in marriage to Marvin Rigelman. To this union, six children were born. In 1980, she began working for the Red Wing Public Library until the 1990s.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church where she was active in the LCW and quilting group. She volunteered at the Goodhue County Historical Society and as a librarian at First Lutheran Church. She was an avid reader and enjoyed music, playing the piano and organ, photography, and going on drives along the Mississippi with Marvin taking photos. Her family recalls her love for baking, especially her bread, and how proud she was of her 100% Swedish heritage. Her great-grandfather, Swan Chellberg, and grandfather, Olaf Olson, came from Sweden and settled near Welch in the mid to late 1800s.
Survivors include four daughters, Jane (Mike) Meier of Red Wing, Jill (William) Johnson of Plymouth, Heidi Marx of Chanhassen, and Gretchen (Bertrand) James of Minneapolis; two sons, Hans (Toni) Rigelman of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., and Karl (Annamarie) Rigelman of Minnetonka; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Mark of Red Wing.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin, on May 20, 2009, and her parents.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, at First Lutheran Church, with Rev. Brian Scott officiating. Burial will be in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, and at the church for 1 hour prior to the service. Memorials are preferred to First Lutheran Church or the Goodhue County Historical Society.
